I recently invested in a fairly decently powered amp (200W per channel x 5)...and it got me thinking; what is the optimal amount of power to send to a speaker before its considered overkill? Based on my fooling around over the years I've developed a preference to match amp and speaker on a 1:1 ratio. If the speaker is 100W then close to, or up to 100W of amplification to that speaker makes it sound sweet, versus less power. Like I say this is purely down to my own fooling around.

So people of the forum, what's your take on speaker/amp matchups?
At what point do we approach overkill?

I refer above to 'conventional amplifier topology' so before I get shot to shreds by the valve boys, I do believe that given a valve setup the equation above does not hold true at all!!!
