I?m quite impressed with a little NAD 3020A I picked up this week. Impressive soundstage and clear mids and highs, a real spunky amp. Made me think the whole solid state vs valve amp debate. Anyone care to comment on their experiences ? preferably if you?ve had both types of amps.
Valve ? great mids and highs; little listening fatigue; a smooth listen. I'm not impressed with bass though. It?s big and it?s there, but a tad too spongy for me.
Solid state ? can do great mids and highs, but top end can get brittle; bass is tighter; prone to listening fatigue, especially if the room isn?t treated.
I know it all depends on the equipment under review, but these are general observations. I?m beginning to think that I need to circumvent the whole matter to improve my set-up. I?m thinking a good pair of standmounts (Monitor Audio Gold series standmounts ? I wish ;D) will give me good detail, with less bass overhang. Anyone care to comment on your experience ? if you?ve had both types of amps. Have you started with valve, tested solid state amps, and then gone back to valve, or vice versa? If so, what were your reasons.
