Are Mede8ers still needed ?

I don't own a Mede8er, but know that its basically a HDD + Multimedia player and that many use them.
Having recently bought a cheap Blu Ray player, I'm amazed that it can read practically any multi-media (audio and Video) file from a flash or external HDD and so exactly what a Mede8er does, and at fraction of the cost and plays back Blu Ray, VD, CD, SACD etc, which a Mede8er cannot.

What's still the point of a Mede8er or the like ?
