I lost a deal that I wanted yesterday, so I've been seething and thinking last night - is pre-owned that lucrative?

I saw a car private that I wanted, but as I needed to trade I needed a dealer to assist with his obvious commission. The commission would have been R10,000.00 with inflated on the road costs of R5,000.00 - plus they'd possibly make a few rand on my own car as well. To me this isn't to bad a deal as I needed as answer within 2 days latest - just the answer, not the deal done.

However I found myself constantly having to phone/email for an update on where we sat as time was running out. the Autobid figure on my car was low and he chatted about buying for their own dealership to assist - but no confirmation of the actual figures. The quote was done on figures I had no idea about and no call to explain how they got to it.

Basically - I expected more and the at the very least, maybe some assistance to close the deal with an answer within the 2 two days. After all it was a guaranteed sell brought to them. But then I thought perhaps a measly R15,000 for some paperwork is a too little for them? Perhaps I was just a nuisance

What does a car dealership actually make on a vehicle?
