So, today, I finally got hold of a (generic, called K22) stylus for my Technics/Panasonic EPC-270C cartridge from Zakspeed. Swopped out the Shure M44-7 with original stylus for this on the Technics SL-1200 Mk2 tonight, and it sounds better (more clarity and detail). Or, at least, I prefer the sound.
The Shure M44-7 (bullet proof!) will be great for playing more beat-up 2nd hand records (i.e. most of my records!) but the EPC-270 will be my serious listening cartridge on the SL1200.
Then, I thought I would try my AT-120E on the SL1200 Mk2. By all accounts (and price), this should beat the socks off the other two carts. But there seems to be a problem: at the same volume (on my Nad 304) the AT is so soft (low volume) as to be almost inaudible. Crank it up to about 2x the volume I use for the other 2, and it starts to sound better, but not right. But I also do not want to have to do that, really (crank it up like that). My normal listening volume is about 10 'o' clock, and I have to turn the NAD up to about 1 'o' clock before I get a similar volume from the AT-120E.
The Shure M44-7 and the Technics EPC-270C are both in Technics headshells, and the AT-120E is in a Pioneer headshell.
Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong? What else should I do? (The AT120E sounds brilliant in a Marantz headshell on my Marants turntable).
Thanks,
Johan
