Am I just hearing things, or are these speakers really good?
I got a pair of 35year old B&W DM6's from Mervin a few weeks ago. Now are these things FUGLY, although with their grills on they look quite nice.
I just received the drive units that's been repaired on Saturday, but the one tweeter cant be fixed. I've put them all together for a quick listen, with some 19mm Seas tweeters, and what a suprise.
I didn't expect much, as 1) the tweeter is not yet match to the x-over, and 2) these have wide baffles with steps for time alignment, but these steps and wide baffle would also cause diffraction. B&W fix this with foam pads around the tweeter, but haven't added these yet.
As for the tweeter issue, I must say that a highish x-over frequency, and an adjustable L-pad, makes things easier.
Anyhow, at first I wasn't too impressed. Nothing wrong, but nothing super either. Then I turned up the volume, and wow.
To put it in perspective. I owned a pair of Chario academy 1's. They cost R16k new in 1999, and IMO a great speaker. But my own transmission lines was just so much better than the Charios, that I was never even listening to the Chario's when I still had my transmission lines. Sadly both these systems are stolen, but from what I can remember, these B&W are better than any speaker I ever owned.
Or maybe its just too long since I owned a good set of speakers :-\ ;D
My impressions are based on a 1 hour listen to them before I left for Zimbabwe. I Can't wait to get back and listen some more.
