So often the question is asked in regards the best receiver, speakers, etc in a price range and more often than not the answer will include "go listen"
To any newcomers on this forum, take that advice! Determine what is available in your price range and audition till you are satisfied before laying out the money.
A friend of mine bought a Harman Kardon AVR 235 last week without auditioning after I have told time and time again to first audition. Off course he bought the unit at that friendly store that does grey/paralel imports and that do not offer returns unless its faulty.
He is terribly disappointed with the sound and rightfully so. The sound seems "Techno" even in straight stereo with very little mid-bass and annoying highs. The so-called high-current seems non-existent as it appears as if the amp does not have anything in reserve. Okay maybe I am judging too hastily as the interconnects are doubtful(standard RCA phono cables) and the speakers are about 15 years old, but it did sound quite good when connected to his old Kenwood integrated amplifier. I have suggested that he bring the receiver to my place and connect it to my setup and if he does(quite headstrong and always believes he is right-sounds like me ) I will follow up on the eventual impressions.
My point I am laboriously trying to make is not to blindly believe what others(and Marketers) think of a piece of equipment but to let your ears decide.
