Best place to set up a TT

Not sure if this topic has been discussed before.......if so, then I apologise.

What is the best way to place your TT. My TT is in a cabinet, and it picks up the sound from the speakers and thus creating a lot of feedback. So i can only play my music on low levels :headbanger: 

How far away should the TT be from the speakers, or what effect will a piece of sponge have if placed under the TT.

Any advise would be appreciated.
