Best way to setup an LCD TV

hey guys...  I have a 40" full hd lcd tv, with HD-PVR and PS3...  what is the best way to setup the picture on it?  I find that i sometimes get grainy images on the tv, and have tried to set it up, but have got no clue where to start... 

is there perhaps some sort of video or something i can get, with steps on how to setup the TV?  eg, increase brightness until you can/cannot see something specific on the tv? 

apologies for the noob question if it is one...
