My knowledge of things electronic and AV related is not good at all.

I noticed the term 'bi-wiring of speakers' used a lot, and that some of the speakers provide two sets of connections for speaker wires at the back.

I am however unclear as to what is needed to use this and what the benefit is, so here are my basic questions:

1.  What does my AV receiver need to be able to take advantage of this ?  or do I need a second piece of equipment ?

2.  What do I need to be aware of when doing so ?  e.g. sum of the power output of the two sources/power being connected to the speaker must be less than the speaker's ratings ?  what about resistance, how do I calculated what two I can combine to one speaker ?

3.  What is the purpose of doing it ?  Is it only used when a speakers power rating far exceeds the capability of the single source of 'power' , therefore it is supplemented with another source to utilise the speaker's to their fullest ?

4.  What are the risks associated with doing this ?  And how does a person minimise it ?

5.  From personal experience, assuming the right equipment is available, would it be a 'must do' or has anyone found that they actuall prefer not doing it, even though they could ?  If so, why ?

If there is a suitable, layman's version somewhere that explains bi-wiring, please post a link to it (I don't even know if I'm using the right term and/or spelling)
