Blu Ray player

Hi Guys

Do Blu Ray players also need to have software version upgrades like with the PS3, so that you can play the latest 3d and 2d blu ray discs?

Looking to get a 3d player for my bedroom (currently i move the PS3 between the lounge and bedroom).

Also, I'm not sure if i should buy a 3d player now or just wait for the PS4...
