I need some advice from those in the know (reckon I'm in the right place having seen the posts and heard...) about my first speaker build.
A family member who really enjoys his music vids (mostly Frank Sinatra and good looking female vocalists ;) ) has a budget Samsung all in a box ht set. Its got the typical matchbox crappy speakers and quite honestly sounds terrible. I've made it my little project to improve his musical experience. Unfortunately I don't have the budget to run out and get him a proper HT, so I've started upgrading the speakers. So far I've got a decent set of JBL's on front ( thanks LAV!), set the 2-now redundant- speakers up on center (looks kinda cool with the three little matchboxes in the middle, sounds marginally better  but still horrid) and told him to turn the tv's vol right down (major improvement!).
Anyway, the JBL's sound quite clean by themselves, but HT needs a nice center. Since I missed the R200 special Mervin got on the Wharfedale center, I decided to make this budget center my first diy speaker project.

So...can anyone recommend drivers for this project? I was thinking MTM...partly because I THINK the XO will be simpler than attempting a 2.5 . Subtile audiophile is not a real issue as uncle is almost 70, but I want a clear sound that will sound....nice enough. The room is not very big but is part of a open plan in a upstairs/downstairs town house.
Resource wise, I've got woodworking tools, access to wood&paint, some skill in that department, lots of interest en little knowhow. Moneywise its got to be very low.....risk. In fact, the Wharfedale center would have been perfect budgetwise. If that's too low rent, I can go a little more. (Actually I'm saving the cash for my own speakers which should happen a bit later this year.)
So...if you can advise where to go for cheapie drivers or have some cheapies that's in the way, lemme know!
I'd appreciate your help as always.
O yeah, I'm based in Jhb.
