It seems, in Jhb at least, bugs are booming. We've got more flies and mosquitoes this year than I remember ever having here. I guess it doesn't help that we have very 'healthy' garden and live on the side of a green band.
I must have scooped about 10 wasps from the pool today. They wend nicely with the flies that drowned as well. No mosquitoes though, sadly. We've in fact got a mean kind of mosquito that will bite through clothing, no problem. Which I don't like because we have a 4 month old baby and we don't really want to dose him up with insect repellent or put a lot of insect poison in the system with him around.
Anyway, I saw at an outdoor shop in Durban, a few years ago, a mosquito trap that is meant to 'collapse' the mosquito population in a 1km radius or something. Apparently they don't really travel more than 750m or so from where they hatch. It was something like this, if not the same: http://mosquitocentral.com/skeetervac.php
Now, I hate mosquitoes, but not enough to spend thousands in one go to rid me of them. So I found this:

Is anyone doing something - non-poisonuous - to reduce mosquitoes around the house? I don't mean 'keep away', I mean....REDUCE. We've got citronella candles, etc. but these guys don't wait for night time, they do their thing whenever.
