So I'm in the market for a diamond for an engagement ring. I'm traveling to Australia next week and from what I've seen online the prices are pretty good, considering I will be able to claim the 10% GST back I could potentially get a diamond quite a bit cheaper than what I've been quoted locally.
Has anyone bought a diamond overseas and brought it back into the country? Or does anyone know what costs will be involved (customs, vat, etc) with bringing it in?
I mentioned to a local jeweler that I was considering looking at diamonds while in Australia and he went off about how much VAT and customs and shipping I'd end up paying and the pain of going through the South African diamond board to import it... not sure I believe it's this much of a mission and I think he's just trying to scare me into buying with him.
