Buying a subwoofer or DIY

I'm looking for a subwoofer to replace my Onkyo unit, now my question is simple. Would it be better to buy a subwoofer or to build one? Especially in a case where money is a bit tight.
The subwoofer would be for HT use, but music would also be listened to on the system.
