Over the holidays I decided to rework my studio, my turntable (JVC L-31A) was right in front of one of my synth's so it needed to move. So I made a shelf to the side of the studio which is ergonomically a lot better but I would have to lengthen the phono leads. Currently the signal flow goes from the turntable, into my MPC sampler (it has dedicated phono inputs), the sampler then converts to ADAT which then goes into my soundcard and into my iMac via firewire. The problem is this, now that I have had to extend the phono leads by about 5m's I get a crackly noise coming through to the MPC. Take the 5m extension lead off and go straight from the turntable to the MPC, no noise.
The cable is not a cheapy cable but its not expensive either, it is a fairly thick generic molded cable. I converted the one sides connectors from male to female so I could use it as an extension, crackly noise. Thinking that it was maybe my soldering I replaced the cable and used those phono extension adapters, noise is still there. Tried a dedicated phono extension lead and the noise is still there :/
Thought ok, obviously the turntable is not earthed to the MPC, tried that and still the same issue. Thought ok, maybe its the mains power cable, switched that out and still the same noise. By default, its best practice in a studio to run all the gear through one outlet, this ensures there are no ground loops which up until this point i was not getting :\
Is this maybe an impedance thing? The only thing I can think of now, is going to broadcast lines and buying dedicated shielded mic cable and hoping that the better cable has less impedance? But that cable ain't cheap so I don't want to go down that road unless I know for sure that will sort out the problem.
And the reason the turntable goes into the MPC is so that I can record samples directly from vinyl, its designed to do this so I dont think its the MPC preamp or the turntable.
