Cables- Is there a logical explanation ?

Hi

I always thought my cables were not to shitty- and in real terms quite an investment.  I was quite content with what I had.

Then Andre (aka Kent Kassler) came along...with some 'new' speaker cables and some voice inside saying take a chance.... throw something into the pot.

At first they sounded different but I was not jumping out of my seat.

But suddenly the piano sounded brilliant, the amp seemed to be faster, and the slight trace of top end hardness was gone. Suddenly there was no need to replace those very expensive Silver in Oil caps that had been bothering me.

Now I am asking myself - what has happened here:

1) Do cables play in- as it seems to be sounding much better now than at first listen
2) Am I imagining it - why is everything sounding better?
3) Why is the amp I considered as average, suddenly sounding like a delicate beast. Ever so glad I kept it for now I am wondering how much equipment changes could have been avoided had the right cables been used? 
4) Can a lower cable resistance make such a huge difference ?
