Can optical cable that is used for Data transfer be used for 5.1 sound

Hi,

I have a 20m length of Fibre optic data cable. Can I get Toslink adaptors to connect to my receiver and media player so that I can use this for surround sound.

The idea is that I position my media player close to my projector using a short length of HDMI cable (for video) and a long length of Fibre optic cable. (for audio)

Anyone knows?
