I started a new threat, not to continue on the "porn discussion" to give some impressions on my "new" video cam. For some strange reason there seems to be very little interest on the Audio Video forum in videography. Well I am an AV gear ****, that has always loved anything audio/video related. Some years back I had access to semi pro video equipment, but that was still analogue. It was considered semi pro since it was shooting on VHS and not Beta, and the SVHS stereo Panasonic semi pro camera was a pleasure to work with. Back then the Canon pro digital was probably the first digital pro camera on the market, but way too expensive.

In 2002 I bought the Sony Digital8 handy cam, cost me an arm and a leg, but interestingly enough the picture quality was way better the semi pro SVHS analog camera. Problem with the handy cam however is the sound didn't came close the Semi Pro cam with its shotgun mic. Handy cams got very little manual control on Iris and Aperture for instance. Then there is the zoom option..... I just hate the zoom control on any handy cams. Oh and do not forget the tripod. Handy cam, with its terrible zoom, on crappy R300 tripod, just no way to get a smooth video when panning and zoom in/out.

I still have my digital 8, and will probably still use it a lot. But this Canon is just in a different league. And the lens hood helps a lot for anti-glare. Now I just need to sort out my editing options. My laptop doesn't have a Fire-wire port, and my desktop is a little out dated for editing.

The Canon has two ways of holding it. Either on the carry handle or shoulder mount. The zoom button on shoulder position works like a charm. Its variable speed dependant on how hard you press the button.
However, I found it more stable to hold the camera on the handle, but the zoom button on the handle is one speed. Slightly disappointing if you like one style, but the controls in that style are not perfect. But then the light came on. Holding the camera on the handle, and using the dial zoom on the lens works like a dream. It?s just amazing how much control there is in the zoom speed on the dial.

I will give more info on picture quality after I got used to the camera and done some more shooting.
