So. Friday afternoon i go to panic stations. My Teac PX-550 turn table just wont stay at a constant speed! Clean records, new records, old records, varied tracking weight, nothing. out of the blue, the thing just wont stay at one speed... :sulky:
Ok, over to the work bench you go turntable. Lets open you up and see why you randomly speed up, slow down, struggle for power, and annoy me by stopping my enjoyment of music. But, after carefully tracing the circuits, testing components, fiddling with mechanics..... nothing. not a thing seems out of place. :vsad:
Having used the generator on Thursday (eishkom....) with my stuff powered down but still plugged in, i thought perhaps the unclean power had somehow damaged the motor, even without powering it up. yes.... i know....
Some more fussing and i found some dirt around the pots, which may cause this issue, so wiped down and cleaned out with liquid butane lighter refill (costs R32 at spar and works well for cleaning dirty contacts, plus disappears in seconds (beware of condensation on the now cold parts)) as well as cleaned out the motor in the same fashion.
Fast forward to this afternoon and i put the turntable back together and put it back on my hifi stand. magic. its fixed!!! oooorrrrrrrr maybe not. Two LP sides in and the problem is back. man, can't it just work??? but i notice, through the speakers, what sounds like white noise with a hum, even when the stylus is not in contact with the record. Ok, this is weird, I've never had this before... :be:
Suddenly, i notice that for short periods during the white noise, i get complete silence. not consistently, but randomly... i look down at the floor, and notice that the silence comes each time the "activity" light on my network router goes solid indicating no traffic... ahhhh... connected to that port is.... dun dun duuunnnnn!!!!!! (dramatic flair) a newly installed (Friday morning) Ethernet power line transmission link to the primary ADSL router.... :whistler:
Turns out the issue relates to this, as when i unplug it, record player keeps perfect speed, plenty of power, and a nice clean signal.... :headbanger:
For some reason, (perhaps the power modulation) this thing will literally stop the platter from starting, and will make it go way off speed in random directions every time there is traffic... now it all makes sense. :dop:
Moral of the story? Check the simple things first.
Will post a video if anyone expresses interest in seeing the effects.
