Moderators: Don't you think it's time for a seperate secion on car audio?

My car has a mostly stock system, with the exception of a 4 channel amp and a Bose sub that I got from a A8/S-Class/7-series (who knows). It performs like a demon though, considering it has only a 6" driver.

I'd like to upgrade it, as the sound is pretty crap from the factory unit. The main reason I haven't changed it yet is that I will lose the controls on the steering wheel. So now:

1. I've always had Alpine decks, loved the sound and quality of build. I'm concerned though that I am paying for the name more than anything, and was told that the new Sony's sound equally well. Anyone care to shed some light on this? Ideally I'd like a deck that can play mp3, with a radio mute for the carkit.

2. The front speakers need to be upgraded. I listened to some JBL's (at around R1300 for the set including a passive crossover) and they sounded pretty good. This said, it might sound utterly crap in my car (Peugeot 307) and I would like to know other opinions. At this price, I don't really want to quibble about price too much.

Let's say I have a budget of about R3k for the deck and front splits - what would you recommend I get? I'm not looking to win any competitions, simply want something decent. Also, if you can recommend an installer around Randburg/Roodepoort area, this will be great.
