car audio brands...

I'm looking to upgrade the speakers in a polo, and realize I have no clue what the good brands are nowadays. currently it has the original splits in the doors, and jebson 6x9s onthe back, and it sounds horrible. I have a blaupunkt 4 channel amp, and am thinking of better splits for the doors and better 54s for the back...
not looking for high end, just something that one can actually listen to, and doesn't cost much (1k?)
any ideas ?
