My daughter's cellphone contract is up for renewal. She is with the big red company and she has a Blackberry. Nice phone, the BMW of cell phones. Which means they break a lot and after the second or third one you have had enough of the brand. So an Android phone was on the cards. I had a budget of about R200 pm in mind, which should include some airtime and data.
They were running a special on the Huawei P7 for R229 pm, but only in pink. Black or white is/was R299 pm. A little over budget but how can Daddy say no to his blue eyed girl? But pink is just fine with a teenage girl, so on the renewal date we went to the friendly red shop. Sorry dude, we are out of stock on those. Check back next week. So we did, without any luck. And the week aftrer that there were still no pink P7s to be had.
Another thing happened. End of the month came, the contract ran out and BIS along with it. No more BBM, no more BB world, no internet, no nothing. After loading a prepaid data bundle, the internet worked. Kinda, sort of. Nice work, big red cellphone company. Very sneaky.
So now I am the moer in with the big red bunch. There sharp business practices have been getting on my nerves for a long time. Off we go to the big telecommunications company whose biggest shareholder is the government. After looking through their brochure, we settled on a Samsung Mini S5 for R269 pm. See how the budget keeps on increasing? But the story doesn't end here. We ordered one and waited. And waited. We are still waiting.
I checked up on them and the conversation went like:
Have my Samsung S5 Mini arrived?
No, not yet.
Getting desperate now. Can I change the order to an iPhone 5c 16G in pink?
Yes you can, but we don't have them either.
Really deperate. How about an iPhone 5S in white?
We only have them in black.
Clutching at last straw. How about a Samsung S4 Mini?
Haven't had them for quite a while now.
OK then, we will wait for the Samsung S5 Mini, as long as it is white.
