I had an epiphany earlier this week - there are quite a number of people here on the forum who are interested in building speakers, but don't have enough knowledge or experience to attempt it.
In light of this, I have been toying with the idea of developing another kit which will be made available to fellow forum members.
Seeing as we have so many standard speakers around, I am strongly contemplating doing a reasonably high efficiency 2 way floorstanding speaker around a 10" Eminence mid/bass driver in about 50 to 60 liters enclosure. These should sing beautifully on amplifiers with 10 Watts or more power on tap.
The difference will be this: I am looking for two forum members who will work with me in developing the kit, and who will ultimately each own the set of speakers we worked on & take them home after the build is done.
The forum members who join me in this project will gain valuable experience in the planning phase, cabinet build phase, crossover development phase, all the way through to the voicing phase, and finally choosing the name of the speaker. The project will be documented in detail on the forum as a reference for anyone wanting to build the kit & will hopefully also shed some light on common questions potential first time builders have.
At the end of the project, I will arrange for a listening session at a location yet to be determined where fellow forum members may audition the newly built speakers after which we will have an open floor discussion regarding the kit.
The forum members who join me in this project will be required to contribute to the build thread by means of sharing personal experience during the build, as well as sharing knowledge with fellow forum members. This is a community upliftment project after all.
Finally, the individuals who join me will need to fund the project for the cost of the parts and materials only. There will be no cost attached to my time or use of my equipment for this build. From my rough estimates, we will need around R 8k per set of speakers.
Needless to say, you stand to benefit to the value of multiple times the input cost in terms of experience, learning, as well as a fully functional set of speakers. I will not be doing any finishing on the speakers - that will be up to the delegates. I will share insight into finishing methods and be available for advice.
The project will be run over around 6 to 8 weekends and start in mid July 2012. To gain the most benefit from this, it would be advisable for the individual who joins me to be available for a couple of hours on select Saturdays or Sundays. I am in JHB, so please take that into consideration as you will need to come over to my place.
