Hi All,
So I have a pair of Magnepan SMGa's. When I bought them they had quite a bit of delamination, but I spent a good 20 hours carefully stripping, positioning and regluing each wire. They sounded absolutely stunning afterwards, the best speakers I have ever heard to be honest (I haven't had exposure to much more audiophile grade stuff, but I really love them).
A while back I decided, after doing copious amounts of reading, that a capacitor upgrade in the crossover would be a good idea. People said that after replacing the caps, the improvement in sound was amazing.
3 Days ago, I finally got around to replacing them. I replaced the single, small, Richey 50uF 100V cap in each crossover with 2 huge Solen 24uF 250V caps in parallel. After firing them up, there was a considerable degradation in sonic ability... but I expected it. I have left the system playing all day for three days now and they probably have close to 36 hours of playtime on them and quite honestly, it sounds terrible. I know that there is a burn in time for the crossover caps, but I just need some reassurance regarding this.
The SMGa has a series crossover... It consists of the cap(s) and an inductor.
So gentlemen (and ladies), your advice and thoughts please.
Chris
