If you read the news (which I hope most of you do) the government wants to reform the mobile data market. They want the big players (MTN, Vodacom) to slash their data prices among other things. I agree that the data prices could be lower. Other neighbour states, which are less developed, have lower prices. On the other hand the mobile network performance and coverage has steadily increased over the years. I have been to Germany and you will not believe how poor the reception is in major parts of the country. I would even go so far as to say that SA has better LTE reception.
I would compare this with the N4 (Bakwena) highway. Yes you pay toll, but on the other hand the roads are repaired and upgraded.
