I don't have any, I don't like them and furthermore, I don't want any ****, Tom or Harry dip their sticky fingers into my bank accounts.
About 10 days ago, I got an email from my service provider saying they've renewed my domain name at a cost of R130.- and took the money for it from my bank account. Now for many years already, the ISP remained the same and the arrangement was they email me their invoices and I manually pay them as soon as I get their invoice by going to my bank and transfer whatever they require into their account which is at the same bank as mine.
Yesterday, I got an emailed note from them, asking me to check with my bank and confirm that the R130 (for which I received no invoice), was paid, which it was.
How is it possible that anyone can raise a debit order and take money from your account?
I have seen similar instances affecting other people and other banks but what happened here with me, has never occurred before.
I have a "business" current account and called the bank's call centre to ask how they could allow money taken from my account and of course they told me this will be a matter between myself and the party which took the money.
I have no problem with the R130 as I owed that to the SP although they didn't invoice me for it.
Two questions arise - what if they raised the debit order and I didn't have the funds to cover it? Surely I will be liable for the reversal costs of the unpaid debit order? The second question - just say for example a dishonest person in the SP's accounts department or any other crook raised a debit order and removed R130K from my account?
I did eventually receive an apology from the ISP and an assurance that what they did will not happen again but my unease remains.
How widespread is this practice?
