Decent PC sound

I'm looking at adding decent sound to my PC rather than these little free speakers I got with it.

I have 2x Acoustic Research speakers andd on't want to go 5.1 on the PC. What's the best way? Someone said a soundcard with optical out, but there doesn't seem to be a stero amp with optical in ...
