Could the technically clued in members please explain the differences between the various types of distortion on amplifiers and the effect of this on what we hear?
I'm aware of harmonic distortion, cross over distortion and intermodulation distortion but dont know what i hear if any of these exceeds acceptable limits. For example, if i turn the volume up to the point where the music sounds distorted, what type of distortion is that?
And how much of each is acceptable before the sound becomes rubbish. Years ago, the gold standard seemed to be 0.1% harmonic was really good, any cross over distortion was bad and no idea about what level of IMD was ok. Thanks in advance.
