miniDSP have a plethora of DSP based units and I have been fiddling with quite a few,
my latest purchase was a DDRC 22d which is both a piece of software and hardware. The hardware is the DSP convolver , a box that takes in the digital signals , applys the filters and then outputs them in either analog or digital format..more open that later. The software is Dirac live , a room correction program
For a lot more info , go to www.minidsp.com
The reason for using the box is so you can use any device on the playback system , otherwise if you only have computer music as a source, you could run Dirac on a PC .in fact there is a 14 day full functional trial on the Dirac.se site.
At any rate, the way the system works is to measure, correct for both freq and impulse issues to whatever target curve ( the curve you will experience at listening position) you wish to define. It's actually quite simple and the miniDSP Dirac package comes with everything you need and automated steps guiding even a total newbie along.
What makes Dirac different to just any old equalizer is the algorithms it uses in respect of what it tries to correct and how that is implemented. I'm not gonna get into technicalities here.
So the $899 question ( 12500 ,door to door with all duties) is how does t sound?
Bloody amazing, the system is as transparent as it comes, user definable target curves means you can get whatever sound you like and freq limiting means you can correct whatever range of freqs you want.
To cut a longs story short, I used it 2 ways, first allowing the program to work out a suitable target curve on your system and correct full freq and then do the same but for bass from 300hz down.
It just sorted out my bass problems either way, but the full freq correction is just something else.
The speakers lost none of their goodness , but the improvements in definition of soundstage , imaging and realism were plainly audible.. Increased dynamics, much better bass performance , the non corrected output sounded shut in compared.
I was going to use the unit just before an amp for my woofers and only correct the low bass..but I like the full correction a lot.
I would heartily recommend one for those that don't have the leeway to treat the room and mess with positioning, and even to those with treated rooms..
I typed this on a Pos iPad..which I hate.. So excuse typos..I still have to learn to operate it..
