Disrete replacements for 78XX regs

Checking out various discete regs from Burson and DEXA

Has anone here got there own DIY solution or recomendation for a low-cost alternative.

Thinking of upgrading the regular regulators on a Wadia X-32.
Perhaps it is not even woth the trouble?
