Oh my word, this forum is really pissing me off! This is now the 3rd time I am writing all this crap!
Alright, so, this is an idea I've had for a while. I started a thread (found here) to get ideas and suggestions from our fellow forumites which was very useful.
So about 2 weeks ago I started playing around. I went to builders warehouse and blew about 50 bucks on a threaded rod and some nuts and stuff, I borrowed one of the drawers from my kitchen and filled it up with about 7/8KG's of stuff. Build some rails on a make shift frame. Used a wooden bar at the top with some nuts together to be a makeshift flange. Used a single nut in the middle where the wooden bar comes over and sticks out, the threaded rod turns and the nut moves up the rod, forcing the wooden block up and thus the drawer.
This works nicely (albeit is a bit noisy), with it taking about 5-7 seconds to go up and about 3-4 to go right down (the drill only has a slower speed in reverse which makes it go up).
Yes, it's certainly a bit crude but it's effective and cheap too! This was just something to see if my idea was actually feasible which it certainly is.
A created a video of my "contraption" here:
