Do they ?zoom? in and out in audio mixing and mastering?

As the title says, do they zoom into solos in some mixes? It really messes with imaging when suddenly the whole drum kit is spread across the soundstage.

Also, anyone find a piano much harder to pinpoint in the image, maybe because of its size?
