Was thinking to get three hens. Not keen on the noise and fertilization efforts of a rooster. They can run in the sizable backyard during the day. There are adequate sandy patches that they shouldn't have to go rip up the grassed areas. Would have a coop to put them in at night and keep safe from owls. We have an electric fence atop our wall - so no neighborhood cats, nor hopefully the chickens flying over. While while we do have a cat, he is not in the least bit a hunter, just curious. Startup costs should be well below R1000, and monthly feed costs for 10kg should be R160. There's the lawn fertilization, and compost heap turning benifits. And it's also nice just to have animals to husband. And then we'll have organic free range eggs for days (approx 15/week) - for us, friends, and family - in constant supply.
Any do's or dont's? Or any advice on things I might not know or expect?
