Does fuel quality differ between petrol stations?

Please bear with me as I do not know much of cars or their inner workings.

There is a petrol station branded "Puma" from which I frequently buy fuel due to its proximity to my home.

I have overheard people making statements such as; "I will only use Shell fuel in my car." Prompted, at least partly, by such assertions it is also the obscurity, as crude an indicator as that may be, of their brand upon which my questioning of their product is predicated.

Are there any merits to the quoted affirmation and does the quality of fuel differ between petrol stations?

I drive a Toyota Tazz, if that is relevant.
