I've found that I'm able to fall asleep with music playing at normal listening levels and whilst asleep the music is completely in audible to me, so much so, that on awakening I don't immediately hear the music. I've experienced this in my listening room, in busses, trains and aircraft and it's got me wondering what happens physiologically. How does the hearing stop and whilst you're not responding to the aural stimulus I presume the ears are still doing their thing, so if exposed to excessive volume hearing damage is still the inevitable outcome?
