Pretty much inevitable that there will be deaths while the technology gets developed, but I was amazed to read that the USA has about 1.18 deaths per 100 million miles traveled (for driven vehicles).
It seems there have been 2 deaths with driverless vehicles so far, the recent Uber accident and also a Tesla Autopilot crash. I couldn't find firm statistics on the number of miles driven so far, but it seems to be around 10 million miles, so roughly 20 times less safe if my very limited research is correct.
Two points - I wonder how many deaths we in SA have per 100 million miles? and I won't be accepting any rides in a driverless vehicle for a long time.
