Driving from JHB to Ponta (Kosi Bay)

Hi All

Doing the trip later this week from JHB to Ponta (parking car at Kosi Bay border). Anyone by any chance been on that route in the past few weeks who can comment on the roads and the best route? Looking at the map it looks like the easiest is via Bethal, Ermelo, Piet Retief, Pongola etc. Someone mentioned today (uncorroborated though) that there are roadworks causing issues on the Ermelo road and suggested going via Carolina to Piet Retief?
