I've had a pair for Sennheiser HD565 Ovation's for about 10 years now and love listening to music on them direct from my Marantz CD player which has a headphone socket and volume control. I recently auditioned a Sony SACD player which also has a headphone outlet and volume control. The sound was grainy and distorted even at low volume levels, yet when we plugged in a cheaper set of headphones the sound was fine. The Sony's sound though the amp and speakers was fine so the issue seems to lie with the Sony driving the Sennheiser's thought the headphone socket.
