Maybe this will start a new useful permanent thread for driving in and around South Africa
I'll be driving from Centurion to Palabora and plan taking the N1 / R71 (Centurion - Polokwane - Tzaneen - Gravelotte - Palabora).
Seems to be the most direct route.
If anyone's been on this road, particular the R71, please comment on the road condition. I'll be in a VW Polo.
