Hi everyone,
King Julian and I
where to-ing and fro-ing about single ended amplifiers, and what makes them tick, and what makes SET sound so beguiling.
Now DHT's rule the roost in this department, especially the 2A3 and the 45, but the EL84 in triode strapped mode has earned itself a solid reputation and can comfortably perform alongside these DHT's and not feel out of place at all.
Now in triode strapped mode, the humble EL 84 will sing it's heart out at 1.8 watts
, which with speakers in the 93 dB/w plus efficiency will put many a smile on many a face, and raise goosebumps on many an arm. The advantages of cost effectiveness and scaleability are two of the main considerations of this build.
The circuit schematic is nothing new or out of this world, there are millions out there. My feeling is that this tube likes the load a little higher than the much touted 5k and with a slightly higher voltage supply. Also, the EL84m seems to have a slightly higher plate dissipation than the standard EL 84.
I'm still working on the PSU, and will be posting the schematic shortly.
