Error message on AV Receiver

i have a Sony STR-DA5300ES AV Receiver. the unit is about 18months old. it has worked flawlessly since i got it until tonight. i get a "Protector" error message after about 30minutes of usage. the amp is not over heating, temperatures seem to be the same as always. i am not even driving it hard. any ideas what could be causing the problem?
