Have you ever had the experience of meticulously setting up your system and also properly treating the room, being very happy with the results, and then as many of us do getting the idea of going to the "next level up", the endless pursuit of improvement. Then once you start listening to systems you seems to be disappointed, even if they are way more expensive that your own...

Or inversely you may have heard a system costing way less than yours and it just humbled you due to optimal setup and acoustics vs your own.

I think there are several reasons for this :

Acoustics as mentioned on the forum elsewhere play a major role and in my opinion are crucial for getting the most out of your investment. Throwing more money at the problem helps, but the new gear may only reach 70% potential, just like the old ones.

Then there's a worrying one... yours ears / brain has become used to a certain sound. Not a bad thing, but sometimes you need to give a new sound a chance, longer that you have with a demo. Very subjective though, since I believe the sound you like the most is the best for you personally, still, sometimes I'm scared I get audio "tunnel vision" and miss out because of this ""groove" your ears are "in"...

I'm sure I'm not alone in this... any experiences to share?
