Ever wondered why shipping from the USA is so pricey?

Against my better judgement I bought a R600 item of EBay from the USA with around R1500 shipping (EBay global shipping programme).

Been watching it knock around the states for a week being scanned and moved everywhere, no wonder they charge so much!

It has not even left the US yet, I would have thought the land of the great couriers would just send it direct, any idea why so complicated?
