So, this passed weekend we had an interesting argument at Incredible Connection...

Being into vinyl lately, i bought a TEAC PX-550 restored from altie. Now we've all seen those turntables at most shops that sell av related items right? Well this was the subject of "discussion" if you are new to vinyls, with no idea if you will use it lots or once, whether you will colect a huge stack of records, or buy decent hifi gear, should you spend R3000 on one of these crossley or ion turntables? or do you spend say R1000 on a decent restored older/vintage table? (yes, R1000 wont buy you a Gerrard or any top brand, but theres other brands out there that do well)

In my opinion, buying them "shiny pretty things" is a bit of a waste... no matter how you look at it. I mean, most older tables are equipped with decent carts, needles, and since they were designed to be serious audio gear rather than a hipster gimmic, surely they are better? Personally i own two vintage turntables, a TEAC and a Kenwood, and they are really pretty good!

I'd love to see what fellow members think, decent old, or cheap new table for someone new to vinyl?

Regards
