Apologies for appropriating the Hon F_D's name in vain :)

You may vaguely remember Judy the dachshund was bitten by a suspected button spider about two years ago and eventually had a toe amputated due to necrosis.

Recovery has been slow due to skin and tissue loss and during the past year, her troubles became almost a re-run of what happened initially.

A mis-shapen 'nail' grew out from the place where the toe was amputated, causing more problems for the little mutt.

Anyway, two weeks ago, there was another op to remove this unwanted growth and it has been quite a bind to provide errr...post-operative care with pneumatic collars and dressing changes.

Besides painkillers and antibiotics, there was a certain medicinal cream which must be applied 3X per day and which cost R79.- for 20g. Not too unreasonably priced, I thought.

This morning, I went looking for myself for Dettol cream and found this was no longer available.

Instead, I was offered 20g of "BC56", which I later discovered has exactly the same ingredients as the cream our vet prescribed for the dog - right down to the exact percentages per 1g of all the ingredients.

The only difference is the BC56 costs R34,95 for 20g, compared to the medication obtained from the vet which was as mentioned - a few cents short of R80.-, also for 20g.

The pharmaceutical manufacturer is the same - Cipla Health Care (Pty) Ltd.

The pharmacy I bought from is not known for good prices.

I suppose vets have to make a living too...
