Worked until the small hours this morning (4am) and up at 7am, only to be given the news that 'there's a big black thing laying on the patio'.

So I had a look and it was the cowl on top of the chimney. There was quite a wind blowing throughout the night which blew off the cowl and its mounting frame. On the way down, it also broke some roof tiles.

In the pouring rain and howling wind, I had to get up on the roof to tie some thick plastic over the hole where the cowl was and when this was done I had to make a plan to squeeze some epoxy into the cracks in the tiles.

Fortunately, I have some spare tiles but conditions are too difficult up there with the rain and wind to replace them now.

So here I am. Hands smeared with epoxy and badly in need of the hot shower.

Earlier, I asked the missus to call Absa Home Insurance and report the problem.

She was unable to explain or to make the illiterate understand what had happened. All she got from the female at the other end was that Absa doesn't cover 'towels' blowing off chimneys and breaking rooftiles...

Anyone got the phone number of Maria Ramos?
