Hi all.
I have to share this story of absolute luck.
I bought a pair of speakers on Thursday from an older gent who use to be a sound engineer.
Shame I felt him sorry as I don't think he really wanted to sell but curcumstances as you know sometimes force us.
Anyway we spoke for days on the mail as I was trying to find out if it is the units I read so much about.
Eventually I decided let me go buy it as the guy sounded like he needed the cash more urgently.
When I got to him , he forgot that he modded the stuff years ago and added some smaller units in the box... Anyway he said the price remains the same although now 4 units...
Man , I cannot tell you how lucky or excited or whatever you want to call it I was when I realized that these are sought after philips fullrange drivers... Very highly regarded by the fullrange community and still in excellent shape.
The smaller ones , not sure what they are all I can see is CE7...
I took the front cover off the box last night as these speakers are mounted on the inside if the front cover which can completely screw off the box and I tested their open baffle capability , using the mcintosh MC2105 at very low volume and the two placed about 5 meters apart with some makeshift support and a slight tilt upwards and very little toe in ...
Wow man , I cannot believe how open the music got.
Seems they don't like too much computer type bass , but musical instrument bass comes out nice and tunefully as well. There is some sort of magic with certain recordings that makes your hair raise.
I luv this stuff.
Suppose I have to try open baffle first as that might just be the way for these.
I can't wait to purchase a 300b valve amp as I think these guys will prefer them more then the SS Mcintosh.
They rate 98 DB.
I will have to learn quickly here as I hear TQWT design and or open baffle
is best for these.
The guy did a d.i.y. long ago where he mounted two 8? units as well and he
forgot about it,,, so he saif I could have it as is.
They have no crossovers and are just mounted in parallel.
I still cannot believe that a single , simple old driver like this makes such good music. There is no bass
, treble , high , low , detail ,,,,,whatever audiophiles call it , there is just musical music.... And that is what I wanted.
To be honest my B&W CDM7 is now disconnected... I have Kaye's to lots if expensive speakers in shops and this single driver 12" thing is making throw away everything I have read and heard about in terms of what is a good speaker and how it should sound...and guess what , it cost me a mere 1500.00 rand with all 4 units in.
I think when I sell the CDM7 I am going to wire the old chap I got these from some extra bucks as they are most probably worth about 5k for the 12" units alone.
But , like the elders always say, music is subjective.
Cannot post pics here so here are some links to my Instagram pics.
Enjoy.
