Free anti-virus or not?

I was wondering whether there are any free anti-virus software for download from the internet (that does not include some form of marketing gimmick that only becomes apparent after installation)?

Or is it worth forking out the Mandelas for the annual subscription fee that always seems to come too often? With exchange rate being where it is a renewal would now cost 30% more than 8 months ago!
