Generator - about R 15000 for a 5kVa model.  Cheap to run, noisy, needs to be installed and not inside the house
UPS - cheap ones provide "modified sine wave" output and a 2kVa model (R 1400 - Mecer) will last 50 mins unless you add extra battery power.  A Duracell 886 Advanced battery costs R 1750
UPS - pure sine wave costs R 5000 for the same output
Inverter - Made by Genius, these have the advantage of pure sine wave output, fast switching (8 to 10ms) and are more efficient than a UPS.  Expect to pay R 4500 for a 1.2kVa up to R 16000 for 6kVa

All these devices (apart from a stand-alone UPS) need to be installed by an electrician.
